QR code business cards
A QR code business card is a printed or on-screen QR code that opens your contact details when scanned. The single decision that determines whether it is useful or useless is what the code points at — a page you can edit, or data frozen at the moment of printing.

A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode that a phone camera can read and turn into text — usually a web address. A QR code business card uses that mechanism to hand over your contact details: someone points their camera at the square, their phone offers a link, and your profile opens in their browser.
Every iPhone and every modern Android phone does this from the stock camera app. There is no app to install and no account to create on the scanning side, which is why QR has won over NFC for general use — it works with whatever the other person is already holding.
What the code should point at
QR codes can encode several things. For a business card, only one of them is a good idea.

The vCard option is tempting because it saves the recipient a tap. The cost is that the code is a permanent, uncorrectable snapshot — and a dense one, since encoding a full vCard produces a much busier pattern than a short URL, which makes it slower and less reliable to scan in poor light.
Dynamic vs static codes
A static QR code has its destination baked into the black-and-white pattern. Change the destination and you change the pattern, which means reprinting everything.
A dynamic QR code encodes a stable short URL that redirects to wherever the owner currently points it. You can repoint it later, and most services report how many times it has been scanned.
For business cards, dynamic wins — with one caveat worth knowing: the code only keeps working as long as the redirect service does. Pick a service you expect to still exist in five years, and prefer one where the destination is your own profile page rather than an anonymous shortlink. How to make one, step by step
1. Create a profile page
Sign up and claim your username. That username becomes your permanent address — pick the one you would be happy saying out loud, because people will read it off the card.
2. Add your details and links
Photo, name, job title, one line of bio, then your links. Order them by how fast you actually reply, not by how professional they look. Two or three well-chosen links out-perform a wall of eleven.
3. Generate the QR code
Open your dashboard and download your code. Take the highest resolution or vector version available if it is going to a printer — a code upscaled from a small PNG develops soft edges that hurt scan reliability.
4. Place and size it
See the sizing rules below before you send anything to print.
5. Test it
Scan the actual printed object — not the file on your screen — with more than one phone, before you order five hundred of them.
Sizing, contrast and printing rules
- Size: the working rule of thumb is that a code should be at least one tenth of the distance it will be scanned from. Roughly 2 cm (0.8 in) square for a card held at arm's length; 10 cm+ for a poster read across a booth; much larger for a code on a slide at the back of a room.
- Quiet zone: leave clear space around the code equal to about four of its own modules. Text or borders crowding the edge is one of the most common causes of a code that “sometimes doesn't work”.
- Contrast: dark code on a light background. Inverted codes fail on a meaningful share of scanners, and low-contrast colour pairings fail in dim conference lighting.
- Finish: matte beats gloss. A glossy card under venue spotlights reflects straight into the camera.
- Never fold or curve it. A code across a fold or wrapped round a mug loses its geometry.
Where to put your code
The printed card is the least interesting place. A QR code costs nothing to reproduce, so put it everywhere the moment of introduction happens:
- Your phone's lock screen or wallet, for instant sharing
- Your conference badge or lanyard insert
- The last slide of every talk you give
- Your email signature
- Your video-call background, for remote introductions
- A laptop sticker
- The back of the paper cards you already have printed
Testing before the event
Five minutes here prevents a weekend of failed introductions.
- Scan the printed object with an iPhone and with an Android phone.
- Scan it in the lighting you expect — dim hall, harsh booth spotlight, outdoors.
- Scan from the distance people will actually stand at.
- Check the page loads on mobile data, not just on your home wi-fi.
- Tap every link on the page and confirm each one opens correctly.
Five mistakes that kill scans
- Encoding a vCard. Frozen forever and harder to scan.
- Printing it too small. The most common failure by a distance.
- No quiet zone. Designers love to crowd it; scanners hate it.
- Untested colour or inversion. A brand-coloured code that scans on your phone may not on theirs.
- No context next to the code. A bare square gives nobody a reason to scan. Three words — “scan for my details” — measurably help.
